Transcending the boundaries of traditional statistics, this immersive film transforms numerical data into a poignant exploration of life's cycles, the passage of time, and the universal resonance of nostalgia.

Project Description
This film transposes the method of moments, a statistical technique, into the artistic realm. The visual language of statistics is diverted to create representations that no longer describe numerical data, but rather the cycles of life, the passage of time, and the resonance of nostalgia. Through these reinvented graphs, the artist illustrates a universal human experience.
About the Director
Lydia Yakonowsky is a Montreal-based digital artist. Her practice explores experimental video through the integration of real-time technologies, notably in the creation of fulldome films and performances. Trained as an economist, she diverts the visual language of statistics: utilitarian symbols—points, graphs, trend lines—are transformed into iridescent, decorative trinkets whose function is entirely reimagined. Her ornate, sometimes overloaded compositions evoke aspects of human experience; this is how her “existential graphs” take shape.
She is also interested in the forecasting errors of statistical models, which, in an era of algorithms seeking to anticipate and influence our behaviors, choices, purchases, and desires, become signs of freedom: they remind us that there will always remain a space that escapes calculation.
Her works have been presented internationally, including at SATFest and MUTEK (Montreal), the Ista nbul Digital Art Festival 2025, Kanvas Gallery (Dubai), Festival Fotonica (Rome), Future Vision Lab (Taipei), the Lights and Magic Museum (Budapest), the International Festival of Science Visualization (Tokyo), Forum des images (Paris), Film Gate (Miami), and the Shanghai International Film Festival. Her works have also been projected onto public façades as part of Montreal’s first Village Numérique in 2024, and within the Cultural Corridor in 2025.
