As mental health challenges reach unprecedented levels and traditional planetariums seek new revenue streams and community relevance, an emerging frontier is transforming dome spaces into sanctuaries for healing and wellness. This groundbreaking Fulldome Forum session explores how immersive dome environments can serve as powerful tools for anxiety reduction, stress management, and therapeutic intervention, moving far beyond conventional astronomy programming into a realm where art, science, and wellness converge.
Hosted and moderated by Ed Lantz, this comprehensive discussion brings together a remarkable panel of pioneers who are redefining what planetariums can be. Laura Inserra, Founder and Creative Director at Chambers of Awe, joins Sam Stevens, the award-winning immersive artist, director, and composer behind Dreams Lost In Time and Spectra Studios. Joshua Sam Miller brings his expertise as an award-winning immersive impact producer known for Sounds of the Ocean, while Michael and Jahna Perricone share insights from their work with Mindful Soundscapes and The Enlightenment projects. Rounding out the panel is Dr. Mitch Abrams, Founder and CEO of NexGenHealth Ltd., who provides crucial medical and scientific perspective.
The session tackles fundamental questions about why dome environments are uniquely suited for nervous system regulation and the cultivation of awe, while establishing what can be responsibly claimed about their therapeutic benefits. Participants will learn specific design principles covering sound, pacing, visuals, safety protocols, and facilitation techniques that transform spectacle into restorative presence. The discussion examines proven program models, including guided journeys, yoga and movement experiences, hybrid live and playback formats, and touring installations, helping attendees understand which approach best fits different contexts and goals.
Evidence-based approaches take center stage, with practical guidance on measuring outcomes through pre- and post-metrics, tracking retention and repeat attendance, and building credible case studies. The panel explores partnership frameworks that bring together creators, planetariums, mindfulness professionals, healthcare organizations, and community groups in appropriate and effective collaborations. Business models and audience development strategies receive thorough attention, including revenue pathways, accessibility considerations, and methods for serving community mental health needs while maintaining financial sustainability.
This webinar discusses planetariums as legitimate spaces for mental health interventions, provides actionable content creation frameworks, connects creators with research-backed design approaches, and builds a community of practice among professionals pioneering this transformative field.
